TERM 1 - Landforms & Landscapes Flashcards
What are the four geographic regions of Australia?
The Eastern Highlands, Central Lowlands, Coastal Plains and Western Plateau.
What is an endemic species?
A species only found in one place.
What is faulting?
Faulting is when the tectonic plates cause a crack in the earth.
What is folding?
A bend in the rock caused by tectonic plates.
What is climate?
The conditions of a place such as temperature and precipitation.
What is an ecosystem?
A biological community of organisms that interact with their physical environment and each other.
What is leaching
Leaching, usually occurring in rainforests, is when excessive water washes through soil draining its nutrients. The soil will appear orange in colour because it is rich in iron.
What is compost?
Decayed organic material good for plant growth.
What is commercial logging?
Logging and selling the wood for money through businesses.
What is the definition of Indigenous peoples?
People native to the land usually by something like ancestry.
What is erosion?
When an object or substance such as water passes over a natural surface frequently, causing it to slowly destroy that surface.
What is weathering?
The process of being worn out by long exposure to the atmosphere.
What is the Biosphere?
The living part of the Earth.
What is a microclimate?
The climate of a very small area.
What is deforestation
The action of clearing a wide area of trees
What are plantations
An area of trees planted by humans to grow and then be logged and once again replanted. The trees are usually grown straight up and are in straight lines.
Why exactly does human activity contribute to weathering and erosion of landscapes?
The human activity all around the world can lead to many displaced dust particles contributing to the overall weathering of fast moving particles getting intercepted by amazing landforms, which is slowly decaying overtime.
What is sustainable development?
Development conducted which rejuvenates the matter once there.
What is deposition
The process of laying down sediment carried by water, wind or another natural force.
What is a habitat?
The home of an organism.
What is a natural environment
The non-human made surroundings of living and non-living things coexisting.
What is a built environment?
An environment that has been constructed by humans.
