Soldiers from both side dug long holes to hide in.

This was to protect themselves.

If anyone lifted their heads above the top of the trench, there would be a chance that the enemy would see them and shoot shoot their heads off by shells or bullets.

> The soldiers suffered shell shock that was caused by the exploding bombs etc.

is a form of mental breakdown that is caused by the constant death, comrades bleeding in misery and noise of gunfire around them.

diarrhoea, anxiety, ticks on their faces, stomach cramps, sleeplessness and nightmares.

their country’s honor in a war. They wanted their country to be the most powerful and richest

There was competition between Britain and Germany to be leaders of the industrial economies within Europe. Britain was the first country to be industrialised and became rich through manufacturing, but Germany quickly caught up and took the lead in the
early 20th century.

There was tensions building between European countries, particularly between Britain and Germany. Britain had a strong navy. It was used to keep control of their vast Empire. The German Kaiser said he was going to build a great navy to rival the British navy. This lead to increased competition of who is more powerful.

European countries colonised many parts of the world, by doing this the nations of Europe became richer and more powerful towards each other. France and Britain had many colonies which made Europe more powerful. Germany was jealous and wanted to

The suffragettes fought for women’s rights, to be treated equally and to be able to vote.

The suffragettes used civil disobedience to get attention from the public and the press.

This is direct action in order to fight for women’s rights.

For women being employed made them more independent.

Women were divided
the single and widowed women felt like they had more of a right to be employed compared to married women.

After the war there was a rise in unemployment and the men were angry that the women had taken their jobs.

This represents the sacrifices of the dead
soldiers.

This poem was used by the British government as propaganda to help encourage men to join the war.

This poem was not against the war, but encourages the fighting soldiers to
keep on fighting.
