Utopia
An imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. A place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics, laws, customs, and conditions. Comes from Greek words and means “no place”

Very good/unique architecture
Dystopia
An imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. Through a worst-case scenario, Dystopias make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political statement
Characteristics of a Dystopian Society (list atleast 5)
Propoganda
Information, independent thoughts, and freedom are restricted
A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the society (eg. capital and its people in hunger games)
Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance
Fear of outside world
Citizens live in a dehumanized state
They society is an illusion of a perfect Utopian world
How does the protagonist feel in a Dystopia?
They often feel trapped and is struggling to escape
Questions the political systems
Feels something is wrong with the society
Is the Hunger games a Dystopia or a Utopia and why using a characteristic from the selected type
The hunger games is a Dystopia as …… answers vary…….
An example however can be because of the figurehead or concept that is worshipped by the society which is the capital and its people who are worshipped as greater by the districts, whether the districts like them or not
Chapter 1
Setting - District twelve, the Meadow, the woods, the square
Important things that happened - Reaping and Hunger Games introduced and the Reaping takes place with Primrose being selected for the females and also it was revealed that Katniss’s dad dies in a mine explosion
Chapter 2
Setting - Square, District 12, and a flashback set outside of the bakery
Important things that happened - Katniss volunteered for Primrose as she bravely stepped up (it wasn’t that brave as she was about to cry and was nervous), Peeta Mellark was chosen on the boys side, he was told to be one of the sons of the baker and he had two brothers and a flashback happened where he gave bread to a starving, hungry Katniss Everdeen and also the three finger symbol is shown by the crowd to Katniss
Chapter 3
Setting - Justice Building, in a car, in a train and the trains station
Important things that happened - Prim, the Mother, Marge, Gale, and Peeta’s dad (baker) visit her in the Justice Building. They say their goodbyes and advice to her and Peeta’s dad says thanks and Marge gives Katniss a mockingjay pin to represent her district as one thing is allowed. They go from the car to the train station and hop on the trains where they eat supper and Effie Trinket tries to lighten the mood and Haymitch is there, drunk
Chapter 4
Setting - The train
Important things that happened - Katniss thinks back to her past when she first stating selling things in the district to people, the food that they didn’t need to eat and when she started hunting using her father’s tips as she went further into the woods every day. She displays her knife-throwing skills to Haymitch as he had punched Peeta. Haymitch is impressed and gives them the first tips of what will happen when they arrive there
Chapter 5
Setting: In the Capitol
Important things that happened - Katniss gets the body hair ripped off and she gets make-up put on her. She gets given her
costume/dress which is a black unitard and Peeta is given a matching costume. They both have fake, safe flames on them so when they walk out they will be covered in fake flames on their costumes. The crowd cheer for both of them and throw flowers at them. The two stylists are Portia (Peeta’s one) and Cinna (Katniss’s one)
Chapter 6
Setting - The training centre
Important things that happened - They ate at the table as they discussed how amazing the entrance was as Cinna is there aswell. An Avox (a prisoner who has committed a crime and works as a type of slave at the training centre) is there and is a girl who Katniss recognises as she was running away in the woods with another boy as a ship hovering in the sky took them away. Katniss was with Gale. Peeta and Katniss go up on the rooftop and talk. The Avox must not be talken to unless orders are given
Chapter 7
Setting - The training centre
Important things that happened - Haymitch tells them to not share their skills until the private assessment. They were told to learn things they had never done before. They learn to tie knots, camouflage in which Peeta excels, starting fires, knife throwing, making shelter, spear throwing,
spotting edible plants which Katniss excels in and hand-to-hand combat which Peeta excels in. Rue is introduced as the 12 year old girl. At the judging Katniss misses a few shots but then starts to hit perfect shots however barely any gamekeepers saw. She then shot an arrow towards them and straight into a apple in the roasted pigs mouth and leaves without dismissal
Chapter 8
Setting - Training centre
Important things that happened - Katniss cries but at dinner she tells everybody what has happened and they are quite suprised. At the final reveal of the scores Rue gets a 7, most career tributes got from 8-10 and Katniss gets 11. Katniss then describes her relationship with Gale as she talks about how they first met and how they became best friends
Chapter 9
Setting - Training Centre
Important things that happened - Peeta and Katniss are being coached seperately. 4 hours with Effie Trinket for presentation and 4 hours with Haymitch for content for both of them. Caesar Flickerman is the host of the interviews. Rue from district eleven is paired up with a boy named Thresh. Katniss’s interview goes well as she makes the crowd laugh and feel bad for her and shows off her dress which has fire when she twirls. Peeta makes the audience laugh and says his love for Katniss
