Key markers to determine tense
When you see “uviero” which person/tense are you in?
“iero” is only found in the Third Person Plural Preterite (eg ellos bebieron, they drank)

“iera” is only found in the Subjunctive Imperfect (all persons) of ER verbs and some IR verbs.

“uviere” is only found in the Subjunctive Future (all persons) of some verbs.
When a conjugation ends in “o” or “ó” what two tenses/persons can it be?
It is either the Present 1st P.S. (eg puedo, I can) or the Preterite 3rd P.S. (decidió, he decided)
When a conjugation ends in “aste” or “iste” what tense/person must it be?
It must be the Preterite 2nd P.S. (eg tú gritaste, you shouted)
