What is tennis elbow?

A

Lateral epichondylitis- Inflammation of the lateral common extensor tendons.

What causes tennis elbow?

A

Repetitive strain injury in tennis players and others who perform resisted extension at the wrist.
Can also be due to degenerative enthesopathy.

A

Microtears in the common extensor origin

Clinical features of tennis elbow

A

Pain in extension of the wrist and middle finger.

Painful and tender lateral epichondyle.

Treatment of tennis elbow

A
Self- limiting however-
Rest from activities that exacerbate it
NSAIDs
Physiotherapy
Steroid injections
Use of brace (elbow clasp)
Rarely- surgical treatment is given to divide the common extensor origin (has variable result)
