Light fire situation
A fire which can be extinguished with the OPERATION of one handline and/or hand extinguishers or those that can readily be extinguished without resorting to extinguish agents
Medium fire situation
A fire which may be extinguished with the OPERATION OF 2 Handlines
First due truck officer general responsibilities
Maintain control of apt door by leaving member of inside team inside the apt at door
Inform IC and engine officer location of fire apt and when you enter to,search for location of fire
Need to control flow paths until a charged line is advancing into the fire area extinguishing fire
Communicate the location of the fire ,fire conditions or difficulty finding the fire to IC OR ENGINE OFFICER

Notify officer of intended destination when leaving primary position
Position apparatus for complete coverage and immediate use..if cannot inform IC and OFFICER
Fire apt and fire escape in front LCC and OVM work together to VEIS fire apt
A situation may arise is obvious need to use the aerial for the roof ff but at the same time there is an apparent need to remove a occupant .. What factors will help you reach a decision as to initial use
- Emotional state of occupant
- Fire/smoke in the immediate vicinity of the occupant
- Location and severity of fire
- Time element

Roofman responsibilities at OLT
- Conduct size up of all vertical ventilation points including a visual survey of exterior
Look for life hazards and reassess vent profile
Communicate findings to officer - Proceed to bulkhead and prepare to vent .. Communicate with officer .. If he does not want vertical vent do not vent .. Bit he may force door probe for victims and immediately close and control door ( if can’t control door immediately notify ladder officer in fire area)
- When necessary team up with ovm and VEIS the fire floor and if not needed VEIS floors above fire
- When necessary team up with 2nd roof to VEIS all floors above fire (fire in front and front fire escape )
5.top floor fires vent windows and responsible for cutting roof
If roof man finds roof level skylight covered by roofing materials he may need saw to vent . He should inform
The IC
If given permission to vent roof man should vent
- Bulkhead door first (if difficulty break skylight over bulkhead first)
- Next is scuttle cover if roof has
- Skylight over bulkhead or on roof
after removing roof level skylight or scuttle returns can be checked
NOTE IF FIRE AND SMOKE CONDITIONS ARE OBVIOUSLY HEAVY VENTING OF SKYLIGHTS PRIOR TO REMOVAL OF SCUTTLE COVER TO RELIEVE THE INTERIOR STAIR WOULD BE JUSTIFIED
Remove skylight or coverings over all shafts if indicated by heavy heat and smoke conditions ,,,probe with hook to ensure I obstructed outlet ( except dumbwaiter)
What are the times that a roof man can proceed to bulkhead and vent without direct communication with his officer
Upon hearing that the interior team has door control on the fire floor or charged hoseline is advancing into the fire apt
Variations if TL first due at OLT
- LCC on pedestal
- Ovm in bucket
- Roof- officer MAY ask roof to perform horizontal vent of fire apt after completion of initial duties ( bulkhead , scuttle ,skylight )
If VEIS team up with 2nd roof or AAM
The second due officer due officer should size up conditions before proceeding to the floor above. The following must be considered
1 severity and location of the fire
- Line placement and availability of water
- Control of the fire apt door
- Consideration of an area of refuge
Note 2nd due ladder must ENSURE OFFICERSSS ON THE fire floor are made aware of his intentions to go above
Also force one or more doors on each floor to provide area of refuge

Top floor fires the 2nd due can man should take
Two hooks instead of can
2 nod due LCC OLT fires
Position - front of fire building - if not needed there above fire with 2nd ovm
If possible position rig to cover fire bull ding
Be alert to first due being blocked out ..in this instance if this position not covered notify IC
Assist with laddering in front
Team up with 2 Nd ovm VEIS floor above
Be ready use aerial or portable to assist

All of above is determined by the physical characteristics of the building ,location of fire and severity of fire
2nd ovm duties at OLT fires
Assist with laddering
Search for victims and fire extension on all floors above the fire
Vent for extinguishment ( as the hoseline is advancing and applying water to extinguish fire
Vent for search must notify officer and team up ( unless know. Life hazard )
Team up - only rear fire escape or fire is in rear team up,with 2nd roof directly over fire
Front fire escape and fire in front team up with 2nd LCC directly over fire

Duties of 2nd due roof at OLT fire
Assist and confirm all duties of the first due roof have been completed
Whenever possible first and second roof should team up to complete roof duties
Whenever possible team up with first roof or 2nd ovm to search and vent all floors above fire
Operational variations for second due truck At OLT ( cockloft/top floor fires )
INSIDE Team - proceed to top floor and assist first ladder with search of all top floor apts
ROOF POSITION- proceed to roof with saw
OVM POSITION - vent the fire apt from the fire escape ( request permission from first ladder officer )
If first ovm has already vented fire apt 2nd ovm will vent adjoining apt
Reached via fire escape below
LCC- front of building if not needed here proceed to roof
- Assist first ladder with laddering if required
- Assist in vertical and horizontal vent as ordered
- Other duties as directed by company officer
Notes about top flor fires OLT/NLT
Critical need for manpower for top floor fires especially NLT
If difficulty experienced when venting windows from roof level it may be necessary to cut vent holes in Roof before completion of horizontal vent
When encountering membrane roofs notify IC
dumbwaiter fires OLT/NLT
Dumbwaiter shafts if fire in cellar exposes dumbwaiter all floors above must be checked
Extension may be laterally and vertically
Notify all units of dumbwaiter fire
Top floor cockloft and cellar check ASAP
Heavy smoke venting out dumbwaiter shaft roof ff notify his OFFICER
Fire reported in dumbwaiter roof ff should vent dumbwaiter bulkhead
Not allot of smoke when vent dumbwaiter bulkhead notify officer
If tarred over notify officer
Do not stick any part of body in shaft
Air and light shaft fires
First due operate the same as reg fire
2nd due
Inside team assignment remain the same
2’nd LCC position apparatus to cover exposed building and if not needed in fire building is available to operate in exposed building
Roof and ovm will operate as normal unless not needed in fire building will be available to work in exposed building
First due engine at light/air shaft fire
After controlling the fire in room exposing the shaft , must direct the nozzle stream into shaft and control the shaft fire before continuing through the apt for final extinguishment
When operating on roof what should a member due to alert others of a open skylight or scuttle
Place skylight or scuttle upside down
When using a haligen to help reach the top of the bulkhead you should place the haligen how
Fork down and adz up
When coping is present remove piece and place 6 hook on bulkhead
Smoke issuing from a cornice is considered a positive sign that fire is in the cockloft
False without investigation this cannot be taken as a positive evidence that there’s fire in the cockloft
Only valid conclusion that can be made is that smoke and heat are entering cockloft
Under no conditions should the cornice be opened for smoke
If still doubtful open ceilings below or returns
To determine where to place roof opening
Soft spots or bubbles
Melting snow or ice
On wet roof steam rising or dry spot
Sense of touch at the BASE of the soil or waste pipe
Knowledge of the fire location gathered on travel to the roof
Looking over roof edge
HT communications
If primary or secondary search is delayed or not completed for any reason than
IC MUST be notified
Note later it says if for any reason a through search of an area has not be completed the ff officer must be informed and a careful executed follow up search must be initiates
Ovm must notify officer before entering fire apt to search but it cannot enter fire apt the ovm
Probe immediate area . If adjoining apt is charged with heat and smoke then he still must notify HIS officer of entering
Access for the apt of above by second due may be attained by
Interior stairs Fire escapes Through common partition wall By crawling across the public hall from a tenable apt on the same floor if conditions permit Aerial/portable
If you as second due cannot obtain an area of refuge on the floor above and the attack line is ready to move in then
Must immediately return to the fire floor before the door to the fire area is opened ..you must not delay the start of fire extinguishment
Who is responsible for the control of the apt door on the fire floor in OLT/NLT
The engine and ladder officers operating on the fire floor
Prior to proceeding to the floor above the 2nd due ladder should consider all of the following
- Life hazard
- Status of line
- Door to fire area (control)
- Location and volume of fire
- Has ventilation of fire apt been affected
- If roof vented
- Type of occupancy
- Construction of apt doors
- Has building undergone renovations introducing many voids
