Synovial hinge-joint.
What divides the TMJ?
Fibrocartilaginous disc.
Describe conditions that involve the TMJ.
- TMJ disorder: pain referring to the ear, jaw and lateral side of the head.
- TMJ dislocation.
- Arthritis.
What nerve innervates the TMJ?
Auriculotemporal Nerve.
How is the joint capsule stabilised?
Extracapsular Ligament.
Describe the initial opening of the jaw.
Depression of the mandible is by the hinge (rotational) action in the inferior half of the joint cavity.
Describe opening the jaw wider.
Condyle glide forward over the articular tubercle, occurring in the superior half of the joint cavity.
What movements are required for retraction and protraction of the mandible.
Superior half of the joint cavity.
What does the condyle not do in normal depression?
Condyle does not pass in front of the articular process.
