What are temporal sentences and what mood are they?
you use them in order to explain in what moment one action happened with respect to another
generally, use INDICATIVE for past, present, habitual actions
generally, use SUBJUNCTIVE for future actions
Immediately - as soon as
- TAN PRONTO COMO +ind/subj
eg. ayer, tan pronto como llegaron se tomaron un café = yesterday, as soon as they arrived they got a coffee - EN CUANTO + ind/subj
eg. ayer, en cuanto llegaron se tomaron una copa = yesterday, as soon as they arrived they got a wine glass - NADA MÁS +infinitive
eg. ayer, nada más llegar se tomaron una copa = yesterday, as soon as they arrived they got a wine glass
Simultaneously (while) and Limited (until)
- MIENTRAS + ind/subj
eg. mientras todo va bien, nadie se queja = while all went well, no one was complaining - HASTA (QUE) + ind/subj (infinitive if same subject)
eg. no fuimos hasta que terminamos el trabajo = we didnt go until we finished the work
Before and After
-only changes if there is one subject or two subjects
-ANTES DE (QUE) +infinitve/subj
eg. Te llamaré antes de salir (same subject ‘yo’) = I will call you before I leave
Te llamaré antes de que salgas (yo/tu) = I will call you before you leave
-DESPUÉS DE (QUE) +infinitve/subj
eg. Después de cenar se va a la cama (same subject) = after dinner she goes to bed
Después de que cenes me voy a la cama (2 subjects) = after you eat dinner I go to bed
AL + infinitive
- use for contemporary events and for an educated register
eg. al verla con su vesitdo de noche, se enamoró = when he saw her with her night dress, he loved her
MIENTRAS
- indicates two events that developed simultaneously in the past/present/future
eg. vayan al supermercado mientras yo limpio la casa = they went to the supermarket while i cleaned the house - can use MIENTRAS + subjunctive to introduce a condition
eg. mientras no me los pierdas, puedes usar mis guantes = if you dont loose them, you can use my gloves
MIENTRAS TANTO/ENTRETANTO/ ENTRE TANTO
- to link two simultaneous events in the past/present/future
eg. termina de arreglarte sin prisa. mientras tanto, yo voy a ver el noticiero = he finished getting you ready without rush. Meanwhile, I am going to watch the news
A MEDIA QUE / CONFORME / SEGÚN
- point to two habitual, past/future events that occurred in a parallel and progressive from
eg. ordenaba los documentos conforme los entregaban = he ordered the documents in the same way as they had been delivered
APENAS ASÍ QUE EN CUANTO NADA MÁS QUE NO BIEN TAN PRONTO COMO
- indicates a habitual, past or present event is immediately before another
eg. no bien entraba a su oficina, se ponía a organizar el trabajo del día = Immediately after entering his office, he set to organising the work of the day

- they present a habitual, past, future or present event that happened before another
eg. Después de tomarse un café, se sintió mucho mejor = after drinking a coffee, he felt much better
ANTES DE

- present a habitual, past, future or present event previous to another
eg. los ninnos cenan antes de que lleguen sus padres = the children eat dinner before their parents arrive
DE AQUÍ A QUE
DESDE QUE
- indicates beginning of an event with respect to another
eg. desde que vive en París, no hemos oído hablar de él = since living in Paris, we havent heard a word from him
HASTA QUE
- indicates the final limit of a present, habitual, past or future event with respect to another
eg. los obreros trabajaron hasta que se hizo de noche = the labourers worked until night came
SIEMPRE QUE
CADA VEZ QUE
TODAS LAS VECES QUE
- indicate that two habitual, past or future events always happen at the same time
eg. siempre que viaja, les compra regalos a todos sus amigos = always when he travels, he buys presents for all his friends
