What are temporal sentences and what mood are they?

A

you use them in order to explain in what moment one action happened with respect to another
generally, use INDICATIVE for past, present, habitual actions
generally, use SUBJUNCTIVE for future actions

Immediately - as soon as

A
  • TAN PRONTO COMO +ind/subj
    eg. ayer, tan pronto como llegaron se tomaron un café = yesterday, as soon as they arrived they got a coffee
  • EN CUANTO + ind/subj
    eg. ayer, en cuanto llegaron se tomaron una copa = yesterday, as soon as they arrived they got a wine glass
  • NADA MÁS +infinitive
    eg. ayer, nada más llegar se tomaron una copa = yesterday, as soon as they arrived they got a wine glass

Simultaneously (while) and Limited (until)

A
  • MIENTRAS + ind/subj
    eg. mientras todo va bien, nadie se queja = while all went well, no one was complaining
  • HASTA (QUE) + ind/subj (infinitive if same subject)
    eg. no fuimos hasta que terminamos el trabajo = we didnt go until we finished the work

Before and After

A

-only changes if there is one subject or two subjects
-ANTES DE (QUE) +infinitve/subj
eg. Te llamaré antes de salir (same subject ‘yo’) = I will call you before I leave
Te llamaré antes de que salgas (yo/tu) = I will call you before you leave
-DESPUÉS DE (QUE) +infinitve/subj
eg. Después de cenar se va a la cama (same subject) = after dinner she goes to bed
Después de que cenes me voy a la cama (2 subjects) = after you eat dinner I go to bed

MIENTRAS

A
  • indicates two events that developed simultaneously in the past/present/future
    eg. vayan al supermercado mientras yo limpio la casa = they went to the supermarket while i cleaned the house
  • can use MIENTRAS + subjunctive to introduce a condition
    eg. mientras no me los pierdas, puedes usar mis guantes = if you dont loose them, you can use my gloves
