A

If the direct object is a person, add ‘a’
eg. He visto a Luis - I have seen Luis
If the indirect object is a person, add ‘a’
eg. Le pregunté a Ana - I asked it to Ana
Except if the indirect object is a pronoun, then use ‘de’
eg. Me preguntó qué quería de ella - He asked me what she wanted

A

the INDIRECT object pronoun always goes BEFORE the DIRECT object pronoun
eg. Me lo dijeron ayer - They asked me about it yesterday

A

They can either go before the conjugated verb
eg. os lo quiero entregar - I want it to be delivered to you (pl)
Or they can attach to the end of the infinitive

Reduplication of indirect object

A
  • MUST reduplicate when the indirect object is ‘a’ + personal pronoun
    eg. Dijeron a ella que > Le dijeron a ella que = they said it to her that
  • often reduplicate when IO is ‘a’ + name
    eg. (Le) dijeron a Luisa que = They said (it) to Luisa that
    -MUST reduplicate when the IO goes before the verb
    eg. A mí gusta comer > A mí me gusta comer
    A Paco dijeron que era falso > A Paco le dijeron que era falso

  • MUST reduplicate when direct object is ‘a’ + personal pronoun
    eg. Eligieron a ellas > las eligieron a ellas = they chose them
  • DO NOT reduplicate when DO is ‘a’ +name
    eg. Eligieron a Marta = they chose Marta
  • MUST reduplicate when DO goes before the verb
    eg. las patatas compré ayer > las patatas las compré ayer
  • MUST reduplicate when DO is pronoun ‘todo’

Direct Object and the prepositon ‘a’ - you CAN use it when…

A
  • DO refers to people/a personified object (always use ‘a’ here)
    eg. Encontré a Juan en el parque
  • DO is not specific or concrete/ ambiguity in sentence and so use ‘a’ to make DO clearer
    eg. No vi (a) ningún médico en el hospital

  • a + article + possesive
    eg. para el día de la madre ya le compré el regalo a la mía
  • a + article + number
    eg. por suerte, ya compré el regalo a los dos
  • a todos/as
    eg. por suerte ya les compré el regalo a todos
  • a + pronouns
    eg. ?No te ofreció a ti un poco de torta?
