Object pronouns, direct and indirect
Direct: me, te, lo/la, nos, os, los/las
Indirect: me, te, le (se), nos, os, les (se)
the direct object part of the sentence is…
the bit that is directly affected by the action of the verb.
eg. he bebido cerveza
the indirect object part of the sentence is…
the bit that is indirectly affected by the action of the verb
eg. he hablado a mis hijos
direct/indirect objects as people
If the direct object is a person, add ‘a’
eg. He visto a Luis - I have seen Luis
If the indirect object is a person, add ‘a’
eg. Le pregunté a Ana - I asked it to Ana
Except if the indirect object is a pronoun, then use ‘de’
eg. Me preguntó qué quería de ella - He asked me what she wanted
Position of pronouns (direct+indirect) generally
the INDIRECT object pronoun always goes BEFORE the DIRECT object pronoun
eg. Me lo dijeron ayer - They asked me about it yesterday
Position of direct+indirect pronouns with an infinitive or gerund
They can either go before the conjugated verb
eg. os lo quiero entregar - I want it to be delivered to you (pl)
Or they can attach to the end of the infinitive
eg. quiero entregároslo - I want it to be delivered to you (pl)
Position of direct+indirect pronouns with a imperative
always AFTER in one word
eg. Damelo = give it to me
Reduplication of indirect object
- MUST reduplicate when the indirect object is ‘a’ + personal pronoun
eg. Dijeron a ella que > Le dijeron a ella que = they said it to her that - often reduplicate when IO is ‘a’ + name
eg. (Le) dijeron a Luisa que = They said (it) to Luisa that
-MUST reduplicate when the IO goes before the verb
eg. A mí gusta comer > A mí me gusta comer
A Paco dijeron que era falso > A Paco le dijeron que era falso
Reduplication of direct object
- MUST reduplicate when direct object is ‘a’ + personal pronoun
eg. Eligieron a ellas > las eligieron a ellas = they chose them - DO NOT reduplicate when DO is ‘a’ +name
eg. Eligieron a Marta = they chose Marta - MUST reduplicate when DO goes before the verb
eg. las patatas compré ayer > las patatas las compré ayer - MUST reduplicate when DO is pronoun ‘todo’
eg. ‘?Esos libros? Los he leído todos’
