Temporal Extent Flashcards
What is temporal extent?
Every instance of behavior occurs
during some amount of time.
What is duration?
Duration is the amount of time from the onset to the end point of a response.
How is duration measured?
Duration is measured in standard units of time.
When is duration important?
Duration is important when measuring the amount of time
a person engages in a target behavior
For what types of behavior is duration used?
Behaviors that a person has been engaging in for too long or too short of a time, behaviors that occur at high rates, task-oriented continuous behaviors that occur for an extended period of time.
What are the two duration measures researchers and practitioners commonly measure?
BA’s commonly measure total duration per session and duration per occurrence.
What is total duration?
Total duration is a measure of the cumulative time a person engages in the target behavior.
What two procedures are used to measure and report total duration?
Recording the cumulative amount of time a target behavior occurs during an observation period, recording the
amount of time a person spends completing a specific task
What is duration per occurrence?
Duration per occurrence is a measure
of the duration of time that each instance of the target behavior
occurs.
What is an example of total duration per occurrence?
(a) the number
of times noisy disruptions by children on a school bus exceeded
a specified sound threshold and (b) the duration in seconds that
each disruption remained above that threshold
How do you select and combine measures of count and duration?
By determining which dimension of behavior is relevant to the view of the behavior of interest.
What measure would be relevant when trying to determine repeatability and temporal extent.
Duration per occurrence reveals the repeatability and temporal extent of the behavior of interest.
When is total duration preferable to duration per occurrence?
Total duration is relevant when considering behavior endurance.
