Temperature, Pulse, Respiration L01 Flashcards
Explain the process of taking a rectal temperature..
- Restraint the patient
- Lubricate
- Insert into the text I’m using a gentle twisting motion. The thermometer should be directed against the upper surface of the red Tim to avoid insertion into the faecal mass.
- Leave until beeps indicate the reading.
- Remove, wipe clean
- Record result.
- Replace with in cover
- Note any abnormal results.
State at least 4 causes that could change the TPR of an animal…
- pyrexia (high body temperature)
- Infection
- Pain
- Exercise
- Heatstroke
- Fear/excitement
- Hyperthermia (increase in body temperature)
- Hypothermia (reduction in body temperature).
What are some of the causes of some of the causes that change TPR in animals…
- Hibernation
- Shock
- Impeding death
- Immediately before parturition
- Circulatory failure
What multiplication is used when working out the respiration rate of an animal?
Count 30seconds and multiply by 2
OR
Count 10seconds and multiply by 6
Explain the procedure for taking the Pulse of an animal….
And
What area is commonly felt in order to record the Pulse of the animal?
Raised... - fever - exercise - hypoxia - pain - fear Lowered... - unconsciousness - sleep - anaesthesia - debilitating disease Weak... - shock - reduced output from the heart Strong/Jerky... - congenital heart disease - damaged value
What state should the animal be in when recording the respiration rate?
Record when patient at rest, but not asleep.
What can cause an increased respiration rate?
- exercise
- excitement
- shock
What can cause a decreased respiration rate?
- pneumonia
- hydrothorax
- pyothorax
- apnoea (cessation of breathing)
