Pathogenic Organisms L02 Flashcards
Explain the process of which pathogens cause harm to an organism.
- Gain entry
- Multiply the tissue
- Damage the host after finding the hosts defence mechanism.
State 3 facts about bacteria.
- Bacteria will only replicate when conditions are substantial.
- Most are aerobic/anaerobic
- Some can produce dangerous toxins.
State no less than 2 facts about binary fission..
- Transmission = indirect and direct contact
- Replicate by binary fission and conjugation
- Simple cell division
- Prokaryotic
- Eukaryotic
What does aerobic mean?
Needing air
What does anaerobic mean?
Not needing air
What does conjugation mean?
It relates to the exchange and sharing of DNA between bacteria which enhances bacteria ability which in turn = immune to medication.
To put it simply - Exchange/transfer of DNA.
What does the term ‘Sporulation’ mean?
Release of spores.
State 2 facts about fungi (moulds and yeasts)
- Simple plants
2. Lives on dead organic matter
Which out of both moulds and yeasts are multicellular?
Moulds
State 3 facts regarding Moulds.
- Multicellular (complex)
- Requires less moisture than bacteria.
- Much easily destroyed than bacteria
State 3 facts regarding Yeasts.
- Unicellular (simple)
- Requires moisture
- Produce toxins and allergens
- Cause disease by invading healthy tissue.
Is Protozoa single-celled?
State 2 additional facts about Protozoa.
Yes it is single-celled.
- Reproduce by binary fission
- Toxoplasma
- Giardia
- Live off organic matter.
