Common terms, Spread Of Infection, Disease And Vaccination L02 Flashcards
Where should notifiable disease be reported to?
DEFRA - Department for Environment, food and rural affairs.
What is a Zoonotic disease?
A zoonotic disease is a disease that transfers from both animals to human and human to animals.
What are some methods of transmission of zoonotic disease?
- Oral
- Inhalation
- Skin to skin
- Vector
- Blood bourne
State 4 types of zoonotic disease (zoonosis).
- Ringworm
- Cat scratch fever
- Salmonella
- Leptospirosis
- Rabies
- Lymes disease
- Sarcoptic mange.
Explain 2 ways of which disease spread can be controlled.
Disease spread can be controlled by isolating those with the disease. This will prevent the disease from spreading to others.
Another way disease spread can be controlled is by vaccinating the animal.
What do vaccinations protect dogs from?
- canine parvovirus
- canine infectious hepatitis
- canine distemper
- leptospirosis
- kennel cough
- rabies
What do vaccinations protect cats from?
- Feline herpesvirus (Cat Flu)
- Feline infectious enteritis
- Feline Leukaemia
What do vaccinations protect rabbits from?
- Myxomatosis
- RHD1
- RHD2
What is the purpose of vaccinations?
- protect pets from diseases.
- puppies must be vaccinated.
- some boosters are needed annually to ensure your pet stays protected
How do Vaccinations work?
- help build immunity (by producing antibodies)
- a safe inactivated form of the antigen (immunity produces antibodies to help fight off infections.
- the body (if it were to come into contact with the disease), will have antibodies to help fight off and kill any pathogens quickly.
- if the animal were to not have vaccinations and does happen to come into contact with a disease, the animal will most likely die.
Explain the term ‘natural immunity’.
The making of antibodies naturally without the use of vaccinations… and being able to recover from the disease.
State the 4 types of parasites.
- Obligatory - requires a host
- Incidental - can utilise a different host
- Endoparasite - lives inside a host
- Ectoparasite - lives outside a host.
