What is the collision theory?

A

the theory states that only chemical reactions can occur between particles when they collide. For this to happen, the molecules must collide with the correct orientation and have enough activation energy to break existing bonds

is the temperature on reaction rate proportional?

A

If the temperature of a system changes, so will the rate of reaction change in
correspondence to the temperature. If temperature increases, so will the rate of
reaction increase. If the temperature decreases, so will the rate of reaction decrease.

10ml measuring cylinder - thermometer
50ml measuring cylinder - matches
Sodium thiosulfate solution - white paper
Hydrochloric acid
Data logger with light sensor
Bunsen burner

  1. Measure 10mL of sodium thiosulfate and 40mL of water into the conical flask. Measure 5mL of dilute hydrochloric acid in a small measuring cylinder
  2. Put the conical flask over a piece of paper with a cross drawn on it. Add the hydrochloric acid and start the clock.
  3. Swirl the flask to mix the solutions and place it on a piece of white paper drawn on it. Take the initial temperature of the mixture
  4. Look down from the cross above and stop the clock when the cross disappears
  5. Record final temperature of the mixture of the flask
  6. Repeat temperature with a data logger to record change in the amount of light passing through the solution.
    (heating up is necessary for desired temperature, within the range of 15 - 55 degrees)
