Temperature Control Flashcards
What does sweating help to do?
Cool the body
When is more water lost from the body?
When it’s hot
When you lose water through sweat, what do you have to take in to balance this loss?
More water, through food and drink
Where is temperature monitored and controlled?
The thermoregulatory centre, in the brain
What are receptors in the thermoregulatory centre sensitive to?
Temperature of blood flowing through the brain
Where do receptors in the skin send impulses to? What are the messages about?
Thermoregulatory centre, giving information on skin temperature
What 2 things does the body do if the core temperature is too high?
Sweat more, blood vessels near the skin dilate
How does the body cool down by sweating more?
Sweat glands release more sweat which cools the body down by evaporating
Why do the blood vessels supplying the skin capillaries dilate?
So that more blood flows through the capillaries and more heat is lost
What 2 things does the body do if the temperature is too low?
Shiver, blood vessels near the skin constrict
Why do the blood vessels supplying the skin capillaries constrict?
To reduce the flow of blood through the capillaries
Why do muscles shiver?
As their contraction needs respiration which releases energy to warm the body
