Exchange Systems in Plants Flashcards
How does CO2 enter leaves?
By diffusion
What are water and mineral ions absorbed by?
Roots
How is the surface area of the root increased?
By root hairs
How is the surface area of the leaf increased?
Flattened shape and by internal air spaces
Why do plants have stomata?
To obtain CO2 from the atmosphere and to remove O2 produced in photosynthesis
Where do plants mainly lose water vapour from?
Through the stomata, in the leaves
What conditions make evaporation more rapid?
Hot, dry, windy conditions
How do hot conditions make evaporation more rapid?
Increased temp gives particles more heat energy, so they move faster and evaporate
How do windy conditions make evaporation more rapid?
Diffusion occurs faster as water molecules that diffuse move away quickly- creating a high concentration gradient
What’s transporation?
The evaporation of water vapour from the surface of a plant- especially the leaves
What’s the size of stomata controlled by?
Guard cells
