Q

Define Thermal Equilibrium.

A

When two bodies are in thermal equilibrium, there is no net transfer of thermal energy between the bodies in thermal contact and the bodies are at the same temperature.

Q

What is the Absolute Scale of Temperature?

A

It is a theoretical scale and is independent of the property of any particular substance such as volume, resistance.

Q

What is an ideal gas?

A

An ideal gas is a theoretical gas that obeys the equation of state (pV = nRT) at a pressure, volume and temperature.

Q

Explain why an increase in internal energy if an ideal gas is directly related to a rise in temperature of the gas.

A

In the case of an ideal gas, the potential energy of its atoms is negligible because there is no inter atomic forces. Therefore, the internal energy is solely equal to the random distribution of kinetic energies associated with the atoms of the ideal gas. Since kinetic energy increases as temperature of gas increases, increase in temperature increases the internal energy.
