Q
Precontemplation [3]:
A
- Individual has no intention to change behaviour in the near future
- May be unaware that behaviour is problematic
- May only seek help cus of pressure from others
8
Q
Contemplation [4]:
A
- Person may be aware problem exists
- Yet to make a commitment to fix problem
- Amount of effort it will take to give up behaviour is an issue
- Can stay in this stage for a while
9
Q
Preparation [2]:
A
- Individuals who are prepared to change their problem behaviour report small behaviour changes
- such as gambling less frequently or smoking less cigarettes
10
Q
Action [4]:
A
- Individuals modify their behaviour to overcome their problem
- Stage involves most overt behavioural changes
- Requires considerable commitment
- Classified in this stage when they have stayed from 1 day-6 months
11
Q
Maintenance [2]:
A
- Individual aims to consolidate knowledge gained during previous stage to prevent relapse
- Classified with this when they have stayed clean for 6+ months
12
Q
Termination [3]:
A
- Individual is no longer tempted to revert to problem behaviour
- Individual is confident they can maintain the change
- Often adding new goals and achieving even more success
13
Q
Usefulness of the model [2]:
A
- Useful cus it suggests that successful recovery is dependent on the current state individual is in
- Haslam & Draper (2000) found that pregnant women were more convinced of the dangers of smoking while pregnant the further they were into the pregnancy
- Suggests interventions need to be tailored/ more holistic
14
Q
Design weakness in supporting studies [4]:
A
- Research support for this study is not completely reliable
- Some studies dont use control groups
- Others use only self-selected samples
- Other studies also use drug therapies
15
Q
Research fails to support [3]:
A
- Baumann et al (2015) randomly allocated problem drinkers
- One group with specifically tailored help or control group
- They found no significant difference in progress between the staged group and the other
