TEMA 12 - FAMILY SARCOCYSTIDAE, SUBFAMILY TOXOPLASMATINAE Flashcards
Tachyzoite

Pseudocysts

Bradyzoite

Infectant forms
d
Type of cycle Subfamily Toxoplasmatinae
Di- heteroxeoous cycle that is facultative
DH
The cycle is oligoxenous at its level, the parasite can deelop in hosts of the same family.
The memebers of the family Felidae. Unsporulated oocysts are shed in the cat’s feces. Ococyst are shed for 1-3 wees, large numbers may be shed. Oocysts take 1-5 days to sporulate in the environment and become infective.
IH
The cycle is eurixenous at its level, as they may affect all mammals and birds.
Birds and rodens, they become infected ageter ingesting soil, water or plant material containated with oocysts. Oocyst transform into tachyzoites shortly afeter ingestion.
How the DF are infected
They are infected after consuming IH harrbouring tissue cysts. Cats may also become infected directly by ingestion of sporulated oocysts.
Transmission of Toxoplasmosis
Cosmoplitan disease that depends mainly on culinary habits. It occurs by ingestion of mature oocysts, trhough fecal-oral route. They are destroyed at high temperatures.
Also by eating meat of another IH.
Also by transplacental or congenital route because they are able to cross the placental barrrier.
Symptomatology
Humans will experience differernt symtoms depending on their inune status.
Immunocompetent patients- they remain asymptomatic, with eneral symptoms similar to those of flu. In some case, lymphadenopathhy, CNS alterations, myocartidits or penumonia.
Immunosupressed patients; if the infected person is AIDS/HIV patient cerebral toxoplasmsis and death may occur. If the patient ins in immunosuppresive therapy encephalitis, headahce, seizures , coma and detah can occur.
Disease in the fist quarter
It is more difficult, but the consequences are more serious. Chorioretinitis, convulsions, Cic calcifications and hydrocephalus. With unspecific symtpoms like anemia, hepatomegaly and jaundice.
Disease in the second quarter
Mental disorders appear.
Disease in the third quarter
Easier transmission can occur, but the sequels are less important. Children will born asymtomatic, but problems later affecting eyes, CNS and ears. When cats act s complete hosts, they usually present sudden death.
