Q

Teleology as an approach to Christian ethics (2)

A
  1. Consequentialism is often connected to a liberal approach to ethics, which emphasizes reason and experience, and being effective and relevant (as compared to an emphasis on scripture and tradition, and being faithful).
  2. “act in love” Joseph Fletcher

Q

Theological Problems with teleology (especially consequentialism) (3)

A

(1) We are human and finite. We are creatures, not the Creator.
(2) Teleology, especially extrinsic forms like consequentialism, is too rational and calculating. One is always working for one’s end and does not have the opportunity to sit back in awe of God and God’s workings.
(3) There is a tendency in teleological approaches to have no room for suffering.

Q

Philosophical Problems with teleology (5)

A

(1) There are other important aspects of our actions besides the consequences of our actions. Who we are and how we arrive at the consequences are important as well.
(2) One cannot control what the exact consequences of one’s action will be. A deontologist will argue that a moral decision is correct when it is made, not months or years later.
(3) In utilitarianism, the good of the community overrules the rights of the individual.
(4) The proper end or goal, and how to pursue that goal, is debated.
(5) The problem of the end justifying the means.
