Use up the sugar and produce acid
What can’t saliva do
Saliva is slightly alkaline but can’t neutralise the acid quick enough to prevent decay
What does the acid do gradually
Eat into the enamel and dentine causing holes
What do the acid eventually reach
The pulp cavity allowing bacteria to get inside the tooth causing toothache
