TED Day Week of Feb 5th Flashcards
What is in the Central Nervous System?
Brain and Spinal Cord
What is in the Peripheral Nervous System?
All nerves in the body
What are Cerebral Ventricles?
fluid-filled air pockets extend through entire brain and spinal cord
What does the Cerebral Cortex do?
analyzing sensory processing and higher brain functions
What does the Forebrain do?
allows for advanced intelligence
What are Cerebral Hemispheres?
two halves of brain
What is the Corpus Callosum?
fibers connecting the halves of the brain
What does the Frontal Lobe do?
motor functions, language, memory and planning
What does the Motor Cortex do?
responsible for body movement
What does the Prefrontal Cortex do?
responsible for thinking, planning and language
What does Broca’s Area control?
helps control speech production
What is the Parietal Lobe specalized in?
specialized for touch and perception
What does the Temporal Lobe do?
hearing, understanding language and memory
What does Wernicke’s Area control?
understanding speech in temporal lobe
What does the Occipital Lobe contain?
contains visual cortex
What does the Primary Sensory Cortex do?
processes information from senses
What does the Association Cortex do?
integrate simple functions with more complex functions
What does Basal Ganglia do?
structures in the forebrain structure that helps to control movement
What is the Limbic System?
emotional center of the brain
What is the Thalamus?
gateway from sense organs to primary sensory cortex
Hypothalamus
maintains constant internal state
Amygdala
fear,excitment and arousal
Hippocampus
spatial memory
Cerebellum
controls balance
Brain Stem
between the spinal cord and the cerebral cortex that contains the midbrain, pons and medulla
Midbrain
movement, visual stimuli, sound reflexes
Reticular Activating System
key role in arousal
Hindbrain
region below the midbrain that contains the cerebellum, pons and medulla
Pons
connects the cortex with the cerebellum
Medulla
basic functions such as heartbeat and breathing
Spinal Cord
nerves that conveys signals between brain and body
Interneuron
neuron that sends messages to nearby neurons
Reflex
automatic motor response to a sensory stimulus
Somatic Nervous System
part of nervous system coordinating voluntary movement
Autonomic Nervous System
involuntary responses of organs and emotional regulations
Sympathetic Nervous System
autonomic nervous system during fight or flight
