Tectonics And Processes And Landforms Flashcards
What are the layers of the earth in order
Crust
Mantle
Outer core
Inner core
What is the material and Consistency of the crust made of?
Granite and Basalt - Solid
What is the material and consistency of the Mnatle made of ?
Molten Rock- Magma
Calcium Magnesuim iron
Solid and Liqyid
What is the material and consistency of the Outer and Inner core
Outer - Iron and Nickel, liquid
Inner - Iron and Nickel, solid
What Is a tectonic plate?
A rigid segment of the Earths crust which floats on the heavier semi-molten rock
What were the four pieces of Alfred Wegners evidence.
The apparent fit of the continents - Jigsaw puzzle of the coastlines of some countries
Fossil Correlation - identical fossils have been found in rocks on coastlines either side of the ocean
Rock and Mountain correlation - identical rocks and mountain structures have been found on either side of the ocean
Paleoclimate Data - Coal has been found in cold regions and glacial evidence have been found In warmer regions.
How do Convection Currents work?
- The heat from the core heats up the molten magma
- As the magma heats up, it starts to rise and move upwards towards the crust
- As the magma gets close to the crust, it starts to cool. Once it cools it starts to sink back down to the core
- As this is cooling and sinking, it drags and moves the floating pieces of the crust on top of it.
How do Tecronic plates move?
Convection currents
What plate boundary moves away from each other?
Constructive - Allows magma to rise from the mantle below
2 oceanic plates
What plate boundary moves towards each other but the less dense subducts?
Destructive - oceanic crust subducts under the continental crust
What plate boundary moves towards each other but push each other up?
Collision zones - 2 continental pushed up and down
What plate boundary slide past each otger
Conservative - 2 continental plates
How does a Hotspot form?
Hot part of the mantle causes rocks to melt. Magma plume
Magma rises up through crust forming volcanoes. As the plate moves, the volcano is carried away from the Hotspot and becomes inactive. A new volcano can form above the hotpspot
Facts about composite volcanoes
Made up of alternating layers of kava and ash
Destructive boundary
Eruptions are infrequent but violent and can include volcanic bombs
Pyroclastic flows can occur
Steep sided
Facts about shield volcanoes
Constructive boundary
Made of layers of Lava
Gentle slopping sides
Eruptions often or continously but gentle
