Tectonic Plates Flashcards

1
Q

How the tectonic plates are moved?

A

Convection currents in the mantle cause the plates to move - converging (colliding), diverging (separating) and transforming (sliding past each other).

Q

Divergent boundary?

A

2 tectonic plates move apart from each other - sometimes cause mid-ocean ridges by seafloor spreading as the magma comes up from the cracks in the oceanic crust and it cools.

Q

Convergent boundary?

A

2 tectonic plates colide. subduction can happen if oceanic crust collides with continental curst.

Transform boundary?

A

2 tectonic plates slide past each which trigger earthquakes.

Q

Subduction zone?

A

Plates converge and the denser oceanic crust subducts under the continental crust and into the mantle.

Q

What happens when ocean and continental plates collide?

A

Since oceanic crust is denser it will subduct under the continental crust.

Q

How is new crust formed at a divergent boundary?

A

When tectonic plates move apart the seafloor spreads and a crack appears. Magma from the mantle comes out and cools, forming a new crust.
