Rocks Flashcards
3 main types of rocks?
Igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic.
Physical features of igneous rocks?
Rock looks shiny and glasslike, tiny holes and spaces (due to gas bubbles), crystals.
Physical features of sedimentary rocks?
Fairly soft and can break apart easily, can see stones, sand or pebbles in the rock.
Physical features of metamorphic rocks?
Layers, may have crystals.
Examples of igneous rocks?
Basalt (volcanic), granite (plutonic).
Examples of sedimentary rocks?
Limestone, mudstone, coal, sandstone.
Examples of metamorphic rocks?
Marble, quartz, diamond.
What are igneous rocks?
Formed when magma cools and solidifies.
What are sedimentary rocks?
Made from fragments of other rocks which have been cemented together by natural cements and pressure.
What are metamorphic rocks?
Formed from sedimentary and igneous rocks which have been changed because of intense heat and pressure.
What are volcanic igneous rocks?
Igneous rocks formed on the surface of the volcano. Also called extrusive igneous rocks. Smaller crystals because there is less time for crystals to form out of a volcano.
What are plutonic igneous rocks?
Igneous rocks formed inside the volcano. Also called intrusive igneous rocks. Larger crystals because there is more time for crystals to form inside a volcano.
