Tectonic hazards + earthquakes Flashcards
What is the first key theory?
Mantle convection
What is mantle convection?
Mantle gets hot, rises , moves in circular motions and these currents drag along the plates and make them move
What is the name of the circular currents?
Convection currents
Where do convection currents occur?
Under the crust
What is the second key theory?
Slub pull, ridge push
What happens in slab pull, ridge push?
Convection currents in the mantle cause will create a new oceanic crust at divergent boundaries.
What is the downward movement in slab pull, ridge push called?
Subduction
What is slab pull?
Oceanic crust cools and thickens, and pushes down as magma emerges form behind it.
What is ridge push?
Gravitational force, sinking material pulls the plate down.
What is the third key theory?
Sea floor spreading
What is sea floor spreading?
Continuous process of forming new igneous rock at mid ocean ridges.
What type of salt is produced at sea floor spreading?
Basalt
What processes happen at oceanic/oceanic divergence?
Upwelling magma
Divergence
Spreading eg sea floor
What landforms are found at oceanic/oceanic divergence?
Mid ocean ridge
Valleys in the centre of the ridge
Submarine volcanoes
Whats an example of an oceanic/oceanic divergence?
Mid Atlantic ridge
