Technology In Operations Flashcards
Computer aided design
Use of computer software that supports the design process. Advantage is that designs can be created and adapted much more easily that if being done by hand. Disadvantage is that can be expensive to purchase initially, and staff need to be trained to use it
Computer aided manufacturing
The use of computers to control machinery. The machinery has a program in it which controls the movements very precisely.
Advantages of CAM
They operate faster than normal machines, are more accurate and consistent and can create more intricate products
Disadvantages of CAM
More expensive than normal machines, can be difficult to fix if they break down
CAD and CAM used together can assist in lowering production costs due to:
Manufacturing packaging which uses less materials. Design a product with less materials. Waste is reduced as CAM makes less mistakes so not as many materials need to be ordered to cover for production errors
EPOS inventory control
Electronic checkout. Allows a receipt to be given to the customer acting as a proof of purchase. Scans barcodes on products , looks up the price of the item and deducts the item from inventory balance. Business has up to date list of all items sold. Deters theft by staff.
Robotics
Consistent quality, reduction in labour costs, reduced need for supervision, robots do not require a break or holiday.
Barcodes and QR codes
Aid delivery process, can be used to track packages
Use of software
Email - communicate with suppliers and customers
Database - to store supplier data/ stock levels
IT - to research and purchase materials online; websites to compare prices; deliveries tracked and traced (supplier and customer) via websites/ apps/ emails/ sms
