Technology Flashcards
What are limb kinematics?
A study go movement in relation to time and space.
Reflective markers are placed on different parts of joints and limbs, the athlete then performs a movement which is picked up by multiple video or infrared cameras.
Why might limb kinematics be used to optimise performance in sports?
You can use it to:
-analyse joint movement to optimise performance e.g. a golf swing to get the perfect angle at the elbow
-analyse techniques e.g. a football free kick to find the optimal joint movement
What are force plates?
A specialised scale that can measure the size and direction of forces acting on an athlete
Why would force plates be used in sports?
To measure acceleration rate, power output, impact on landing, imbalances in movements
-it can be used to improve technique
-assess injuries
-assess strengths and weaknesses in muscles
-for gait analysis
-to assess balance
-posture analysis
What are wind tunnels?
Steel houses with a 4m wide fan that rotates up to 600rpm.
Why would wind tunnels be used in sports?
F1 drivers or cyclists can use these to assess how air flows around them and look at what can be done to reduce air resistance.
