Technologies Flashcards
Light Microscope
Light passes through the condenser lens and then through the specimen
Living and non-living specimens can be viewed using a light microscope.
Electron Microscope
Uses electron beams and electromagnets instead of light rays and lenses.
Non-living specimens can be viewed with an electron microscope.
Uses a vacuum.
Two Types:
TEM - produces a 2-dimensional image of cells’ internal composition and structures. Very high magnification
SEM - creates a 3-dimensional image of the surface of cells. Lower magnification
Cell Theory
- All living things are made of cells.
- Cells are the basic structural and functional unit of organisms.
- All cells come from pre-existing cells.
Cell Culturing
Cells are grown under controlled conditions in vitro (meaning in glass) by replicating natural conditions.
Each method is specialised and will depend on the organism produced.
Example - Agar Plates
