The scale bar represents a specific whole number of μm and is often 1–5cm in length. In order to draw the scale bar:
1. Determine the actual length of the object to be drawn.
2. When the actual length of the object is determined, divide by the length of the proposed drawing (should be a whole number)
For example:
Length of cell 5 8μm
Length of drawing 5 4cm
Actual length 8 μm
—————————- = ——————-
Length of drawing 4 cm

Scale = 2μm
———–
1cm

Therefore, a scale bar 1cm in length would represent 2μm
