Techniques For Improving Stress Flashcards
Michenbaums method?
Field experiment
Students were assessed before and after using self report and grade averages
What was Michenbaums aim?
To compare SIT with standard behavioural SD and a control group on a waiting list
Michenbaums participants?
21 students aged 17-25
Michenbaums design?
Matched pairs with a random allocation to the three groups
Matched on gender and anxiety levels
Procedure for Michenbaum?
Each pp was tested using a test anxiety questionnaire and was allocated to their group:
1) SIT - 8 therapy sessions, ‘insight’ approach helped them identify their thoughts before hand, then positive statements to say and relaxation techniques
2) SD - 8 therapy sessions, progressive relaxation training (encouraged to use at home)
3) Control group told their were on a waiting list and would receive therapy in the future
Michenbaums results?
1) improved anxiety in both two, mostly in SIT
2) significant difference between two first groups and control group
Michenbaum confusion?
Cognitive techniques are more effective than behavioural techniques such as systematic desensitisation
What was Budynski’s aim?
To see whether biofeedback is an effective way of reducing tension headaches
Budynski’s method?
Experimental method (pps were tested in a lab)
Budynski’s sample?
18 participants who replied to an advert in a Colorado paper
Design for Budynski?
Independent design.
The participants were randomly allocated to one of three groups
Budynski’s procedure?
For 5 weeks they kept a record of their headaches, A&B were given 16 sessions (2 a week for 8 weeks):
A- taught relaxation and told the clicks of biofeedback would reflect their muscle tension.
B- told to focus on clicks and given pseudo feedback
C- no training and told they’d get it in two months
Bydinski’s results?
1) after 3 months A’s tension was significantly lower than B’s
2) A’s headaches dropped significantly lower from their baseline
3) Drug usage in group A decreased
Waxler-Morrisons aim?
To see how social relationships influence response to breast canncer survival
Waxler Morrisons method?
Quasi experiment with women diagnosed with breast cancer.
