Holmes and rahe method
A questionnaire designed to ascertain how much each life event was felt to be a stressor
Holmes and rahe (self report) aim
To create a method that estimates the extent to which life events are stressors
Holmes and rahe procedure
Each pp had to rate a series of 43 life events on how stressful they were. Marriage was given an arbitrary rating of 50 and all the others were to be judged on needing more or less readjustment
Holmes and rahe findings
Highest- death of a spouse
Lowest- minor violation of law
All groups agreed apart from white and black participants disagreed

Agreement in what constitutes a life event and to what extent they cause stress

394 subjects (179 makes and 215 females)
Johansson (combined approach) measure
1) urine sample at the beginning of the day and four times throughout
2) body temp recorded at same time
3) self report with alertness mood and caffeine and nicotine intake
Geer and maisel (physiological) measure
Stress levels measured by GSR and heart rate
