Technical Textiles Flashcards
What is Gore-Tex?
A fabric with breathable yet waterproof properties. Allows vapour produced by wearer to escape yet repels water making it an effective waterproof fabric commonly used for outdoor clothing.
What is Kevlar
Kevlar is a plastic fibre with high tensile strength. Its is heat resistant and extremely hard-wearing. It is a flexible and lightweight synthetic fibre from the class of fibres known as aramids which are modified polyamide fibres.
How is Kevlar so strong
Polyamide molecules connect to form long chains. Aligned parallel to each other inside the fibres acting as reinforcement.
How is Kevlar bulletproof?
If a projectile hits Kevlar, the fibres ‘catch it’ absorbing and dissipating its energy.
What are microfibres?
Synthetic fibres which can be micro-encapsulated. This is where tiny particles are coated to improve the properties as they hold anti-microbial agents.
What are Fire resistant fibres?
Designed to withstand heat and resist burning. Primarily used for protective clothing for fire fighters. Woven to produce a fabric that provides protection against heat and flame without melting or dripping. It is also lightweight and durable.
What are conductive Fabrics?
Made from, coated or blended with conductive metals. Can be used for thermal heating or allowing an electrical signal to pass through them with very little resistance.
These e-textiles can also have batteries, small lights and electronics embedded into them, and are often fitted into sportswear to monitor vital statistics.
