Development in new materials Flashcards
What is graphene?
It is a single layer of carbon atoms, tightly bound in a hexagonal lattice
What is graphene’s strengths?
It’s very light
It’s the thinnest known material ever
Its extremely strong
Conductive to heat and electricity
What is metal foam?
Cellular structures made up of metal containing gas filled pores. With a good stiffness for weight ratio.
What are some properties of metal foam?
What is a use case of it?
The are strong, resist deformation, and can be made into complex geometrical forms
Foams have good heat resistance and sound absorption.
Used for weight saving and impact absorbing structures in vehicles
What is a Liquid Crystal Display?
Low power LCD screens like TV’s contain a matrix of pixels to display an image. A backlight provides light to light to the individual pixels
What are metal coatings?
Protect metal, make it more durable and reduce wear and tear. Unprotected ferrous metals are liable to rusting and corrosion due to exposure to the environment
What is Titanium?
Titanium is used in a form of an alloy
What is the properties of Titanium?
Lightweight, Resists corrosion, high strength making it suitable for space and aircraft.
Doesn’t react with human tissue so is used for artificial joints
What are nanomaterials?
Nanomaterials are materials or substances made at a very small scale. These natural or manufactured materials contain particles less than 100 nanometres in size.
What does nanotechnology add properties to products?
Lightness, tensile strength, and rigidity.
SMART MATERIALS
What is Polymorph?
A polymer that can be shaped and reshaped many times. When warmed to 62 degrees C, the polymorph becomes flexible and easy to mould into the desired shape. When it cools it becomes stiff and strong.
SMART MATERIALS
What is Polymorph used for?
Making bespoke shapes like ergonomic handles
Prototype mechanical parts and for making mouldings.
SMART MATERIALS
What are shape memory alloys?
Group of materials which revert back to their original shape after being deformed by heat or another Stimulus.
SMART MATERIALS
What is quantum tunnelling composite?
A flexible polymer with tiny metal particles embedded into it
When the material is squeezed, pressure forces the particles together and a current of electrons flows between the neighbouring particles
The process of electrons jumping across a gap from one conducting material to another is known at quantum tunnelling.
What are thermochromic materials?
Temperature Sensitive, they change colour at certain ranges of temperature
Can be incorporated into inks and printed onto plastic in the form of temperature indicators.
What are Photochromic pigments?
Change colour when exposed to different UV levels
What is glass reinforced plastic (GRP)?
Polyester material reinforced with glass fibre. Produced by combining thermosetting polyester resin and glass fibres making a strong and lightweight composite. Used in boat hulls etc.
What is Carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CRP)?
It is a thermoplastic reinforced with carbon fibres.
It has a very high strength to weight ratio and is very rigid.
Used in Formula 1
