Tear Film Components Flashcards
Name the tear film components.
Lipid layer - outermost
Aqueous Layer - middle
Mucin Layer - innermost
List the functions of the tear film.
- Protect and lubricate the eye
- Washes away foreign particles
- Reduces risk of infection
- Keeps the surface of the eye smooth and clear
What does the lipid layer consist of ?
Free fatty acids
Cholesterol
Phospholipids
Wax esters
What are the components of the lipid layer secreted by?
Mainly the Meibomian gland , but also the glands of Zeis and Moll.
Where is the Meibomian Gland located?
Tiny oil glands which line the margin of the eyelids.
Tarsal plate of the upper and lower eyelids
List the functions of the lipid layer .
- Provide lubrication for smooth eyelid movement
- Seal the tear film to reduce / prevent evaporation of natural tears
- Lowers surface tension
What does the Aqueous layer consist of ?
Inorganic salts
Glucose
Enzymes
Antibacterial substances such as lysosomes
What is the function of lysosomes?
Destroy invading viruses and bacteria .
If cell is damaged or beyond repair , lysosomes help it self destruct - a process called apoptosis
List the functions of the aqueous layer.
- Oxygen supply to the cornea
- Removes debris and washes it away
- Creates an optically smooth surface by eliminating minor surface irregularity
What is the aqueous layer secreted by?
Lacrimal glands and accessory lacrimal glands
Where is the lacrimal gland located?
Under bony bit of eyebrow towards temporal side
What is attached to the lacrimal glands ?
Excretory lacrimal ducts
Explain how the mucin layer is attached to the corneal epithelial surface
Corneal layer - hydrophobic
It consist of microvilli which project outwards from the surface
Goblet cells from the conjunctiva produce mucous , which migrate across the epithelial surface . The mucous coats and bonds to the epithelial microvilli comprising of glycocalyx
Once the mucous layer has dispersed across the surface the cornea becomes hydrophilic ( water attracting )
List functions of the mucin layer
Provides lubrication
Creates hydrophilic surface
What does a normal tear function require ?
Normal blink reflex
Normal lid aposition
Normal corneal epithelium
