Team Identity
Are we a team?
When members don’t feel like a team they don’t act like a team
Group entitivity
The degree to which people perceive themselves (and others) to be unified, single team or collective
The greater level of entitativity, the more people feel that the group fills their needs, and the more identification people have with their group
Group Identity
The extent to which people feel their group membership is an important part of who they are
Membership in teams provides people with a sense of belonging
Group Identity affects a number of beliefs and behaviors in teams
People with a greater sense of group Identity judge their own group to have higher status
Group Identity considers different situations
Identity fusion- blurring of self/other barriers
Multiple identities - we can be a member in many groups
Common identity and common bonds- bonds based on the group as a whole and bond felt for particular members of the group
Relational and collective identity- based on important relationships to particular people and based on group membership
Group potency
The collective belief of group members that the groups can be effective
Collective efficacy
An individuals belief that a team can perform successfully
Characteristics of groups with collective efficacy
- set more challenging goals
- persist in the face of difficulty
- high likelihood of success
Teams with high cohesion
- more likely to give due credit to their team partners
- are easier to maintain
- are more likely to participate in team activities
- have increase conformity to team norms
- are more likely to serve team rather than individual interests
- are more productive than less cohesive teams
Identity fusion
