Infancy
• Promote Growth & Development through play:
o Rattles, mobiles, teething toys, books, pat-a-cake
• Promote car safety: rear-seat / rear-facing for first 2 years (no longer do you stop at 20 lbs)
Toddler
Guidance for Growth & Development through play and parallel play:
o Books, push and pull toys, tossing ball, simple chores
• Toilet training tips: must be able to verbalize, have sphincter control, can sit and squat, follow directions, recognize urge to go
Preschool
Guidance for Growth & Development through play:
o Play ball, puzzles, tricycles, pretend/dress-up, crafts, books
- Safety: Firearms, stranger danger, helmets, sunscreen, water safety, forward-facing car seat in back, poison safety
- Sleep: night light, regular bedtime, story time, allow to play quietly in their room
School age
Prepubescence: Defined as 2 years preceding puberty
o Varying ages for prepubescence: from 9-12 (girls about 2 years earlier than boys)
o Average age of puberty (12 in girls & 14 in boys)
• Guidance for Growth & Development through play:
o Competitive and cooperative play, board games, crafts, bikes, collections
o Health screening-scoliosis
o Safety: firearms, trampolines, helmets, booster seats for car-back seat until age 13.
o Say “NO” to drugs
Adolescent
Guidance for Growth & Development:
o Through sports and physical fitness
o Nutrition
o Sleep: habits change r/t increased metabolism and rapid growth (they want to stay up later and sleep later)
o Safety: Motor vehicle accidents, firearm, water, substance abuse, STD’s, pregnancy education
! The way to talk about these topics is not by an adult….but rather have another peer group talk about it (they identify with peers more than adults!!!)
o Assess for risk of depression: sleep and appetite changes, mood changes, school performance, isolation, lack of interest
