Teacher Stereotyping, Pupil Identities and the Halo Effect (definitions) Flashcards
Labelling
Teachers actively judge + classify pupils by interpreting behaviour + forming judgements
May include if they are bright, slow, troublemakers etc
Contributes to the moulding of student identities, affects performance + classroom behaviour.
Stereotype
View held by teacher of a student- bright/thick, good/bad, normal/deviant etc
Halo Effect
Good impression of a student in one way may see the student more favourably in other ways- eg as bright or hardworking- even if they aren’t.
Opposite is true, disruptive students may be seen as deficient in other areas.
Self Fulfilling Prophecy
Construction of labels + stereotypes colour the way they treat students, may lead to SFP
Pupil behaviour influenced by the way teachers react, may lead to student-teacher conflicts and formation of pro/anti school subcultures
Labelling as bright/slow may affect performance.
