Avoids putting blame for educational failure on deficiencies in the pupil, their family, their cultural attitudes and values, or material circumstances (from class backgrounds)
They Are Too Deterministic
Once a negative label applied, it always has a negative effect- SFP
But negative label may have opposite effect- encourage students to ‘prove it wrong’
Fuller- black girls subject to negative labelling + put in lower sets + streams, but some reject this and prove teachers wrong through academic success
They Do Not Pay Enough Attention to Power
Doesn’t explain why many teachers hold similar views with regards to ‘ideal pupil’ and ‘proper’ educational knowledge + links to class, gender, or ethnicity
Doesn’t take into account distribution of power in society
They Do Not Pay Enough Attention To Factors Outside School
Don’t take external factors into account- structural, material + cultural
Schools can’t be blamed for external problems + structure of inequality in society
Full account looks at structural + interactionalist perspectives
