Taha tinana - physical - the body
Taha whanau - family and extended family
Taha wairua - spirituality
Using the house as a metaphor what happens if one of the walls is weak or damaged?
It will affect the stability of the structure - weaken the person
Which is considered to be the most essential element required by Maori for health?
Taha wairua - spirituality
What is spirituality for Maori concerned with?
Not just religious beliefs and practices, but also connections to land - ancestral lands.
Taha hinengaro
Concerned with the emotional and mental well-being of a person, but these are linked to how one expresses thoughts and feelings from a group (family) perspective rather than individual reflection.
Taha tinana
Certain parts of the body are sacred such as the head. Special significance given to bodily functions such as sleeping, eating, defecating, and these are kept separate
Why are the ideas around bodily functions that are held by Maori a source of concern in a hospital setting?
Eating, sleeping and toileting usually all takes place in the same setting in a hospital which goes against their beliefs
