An empire that mainly revolved around trade. They were able to do this from the help of fertile soils from the land.
Songhai Empire
The Songhai area broke away from the Mali as a result of it weakening, and the ruler seized control of Timbuktu.
Berber
People of North Africa who found a way to cross the Sahara to Sudan.
Mansa Musa
The wealthy Emperor of Mali who, on his travel to Mecca, gave away lots of his money.
Ibn Battuta
An Islamic Arab who was devoted to spreading the religion on his travel to Mecca and set up libraries with books from around the world.
Trans Saharan Caravan Trade
People formed caravans and used animals to help them cross the Sahara for trade.
Djenne
An area southwest of Timbuktu which was known as an important area for trade, and soon becoming the center of Islamic learning.
Timbuktu
A city in Mali that became an important center for Islamic learning and culture.
