Japan
Shintoism
A religion that started in Japan with the belief that all of nature and ancestors had spirits.
Kami
A divine being of nature. Or lesser gods.
Prince Shotoku
A prince who ruled Japan on behalf of his aunt, and he worked to give Japan a strong and well-organized constitution.
Confucianism
A system that originated from China that had no god to warship.
Shogun
The chief military commander in feudal Japan.
Samurai
A warrior who served a Japanese lord and lived by a strict code of loyalty.
Bushido
A code that was to be followed by all samurai.
Daimyo
A feudal lord who was a very large land owner, and housed people such as Shoguns.
Heian Period
The golden age for Japan where arts and literature flourished.
Torii
A gate that is commonly found at the entrance of a Shinto shrine that marks the area to be a mundane and sacred spot.
Animism
The belief that humans, plants, animals, rocks, rivers, etc, all have their own spirits.
