10
Q

Bimodal distribution of bifido?

A

Production of lactate and short chain fatty acids (SCFA) and the influence on pH. Once a certain threshold of bifidobacteria is reached, the amount of SCFA and lactate produced alter the pH of gut lumen → overcomes buffering capacity of luminal contents → lower pH → shifts bacterial community structure as the non-acid-tolerant members of community die off
