TBI Flashcards
Who is at risk for TBI?
Young, single, men
Three common causes of TBI:
- MVA 2. Fall 3. Firearms
Signs of skull fracture (2):
Clear discharge, CN problems
Three cases of secondary brain injury:
- Amino acids (excitatory)
- Opioids
- Increased ICP
Glasgow scale for TBI
Mild: 13-15
Moderate: 9-12
Severe: 3-5
Duration of LOC for TBI:
Mild: less than 30 minutes
Moderate: 30 - 6 hours
Severe: Over 6 hours
What is heterotypic ossification?
Ectopic bone formation surround soft tissues of joints
What should you prophylax after a TBI?
DVT
What is Chronic traumatic encephalopathy?
Repeated brain damage from football/boxers - progressive degenerative disease
What is cerebral anoxia?
Global loss of oxygen to the brain
Oxygen loss effect on the brain:
LOC in 15 seconds and brain damage in 4 minutes
What are watershed areas:
Areas furthest away from the major arteries of the brain (ACA, MCA, PCA)
Anoxia after how many minutes is a poor prognosis?
8-10 minutes
What is Hypoxic Ischemic Encepahlopathy?
Acute or subacute brain injury in FULL term infants due to asphyxia
Treatment for Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy:
Hypothermia in the first 6 hours
