What is the definition of latent TB?
A TB infection that doesn’t develop active disease but is instead harbored in lung tissue.
What are increased TB rates attributed to?
HIV, immigrants, nosocomial outbreaks, drug resistant TB, decline of public health infrastructure
How does TB survive without active infection?
Infected macrophages die but the pathogen is released extracellularly and is taken up by another macrophage that becomes a tubercle with intact center capable of reactivation.
Who is considered a high risk population?
Immigrants from TB prevalent regions, HIV, homeless, IV drug users, certain medical conditions (diabetes, dialysis) and healthcare workers.
What is the traditional treatment for latent TB?
Isoniazid for 9 months OR Rifampin for 4 months OR Combined for 3 months
