Describe the afferent pathway of cough

A

Cough reflex arc of vagus nerve, regulated by rapidly adapting receptors (RARs), slowly adapting receptors (SARs), and C-fibers. Cough can be stimulated at any level of the vagus nerve (ear to esophagus)

Describe the efferent pathway of cough

A

1) Inspiratory phase- inhalation before glottis closure
2) Compression phase- thoracic and abdominal contraction against fixed diaphragm (large pressure generation)
3) Expiratory phase- glottis opens for rapid air expulsion
4) Relaxation phase- chest wall and abdomen relax
