TB 056- Radiological Emergency Operations Flashcards
________ is any form of energy that travels through space or matter
Radiation
What does N.O.R.M. Stand for?
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material
What is N.O.R.M.?
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material- some existing radiation
What is Non- Ionizing radiation?
Radiation that does not have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and molecules. Heats substances like a microwave heats food
Ex- ultraviolet radiation from the sun and tanning beds
What is ionizing radiation?
Radiation in a form of energy that acts by removing electrons from atoms and molecules that include air, water and living tissue
Biggest threat***
What are the different types in Ionizing radiation?
ALPHA- low power (stopped by paper)
BETA- highly energetic (stopped by clothing) can penetrate skin and cause burns. Most hazardous if inhaled/ ingested
GAMMA- high energy, short wavelength electromagnetic energy emitted from the nucleus of atom. (Stopped if shielded by lead/ concrete)
NEUTRON- small atomic particles possessing no electrical charge and are typically found within atoms’ nucleus (stopped y shielding with thick concrete/ lead)
___________ __________ __________ or RMR is any significant, unauthorized release of a radioactive material into the environment from a fixed facility or transportation vehicle
Radiological Material Release
__________ _________ __________ or R.E.D. Is a containerized radioactive material that directly exposes the public to radiation but does not release contamination
Radiation Exposure Device
______ _______ ______ or R.D.D. Is a device can cause the deliberate release of radioactive material by explosives, by contamination of water or ventilation system, or by a release into the environment
Radiological Dispersal Device
What is a Nuclear Device?
An illicit weapon that is acquired or fabricated by a terrorist group that can produce a nuclear explosion
_______ (R) is the measurement of the amount of energy in the air that may reach the body
Roentgen “rankin”
Measured by total accumulated dose of radiation absorbed by the body over time
What is the ALARA principle?
“As Low As Reasonably Achievable”
Minimize time spent in areas where radiation exposure may occur and maximizing distance between a worker and a source of radiation exposure
_______ orders evacuation or shelter- in- place order to deal with tactical priorities of “loss limiting” and “victim/ occupant stabilization”
Incident Commander
_________ is an invisible cloud- like formation which is projected by such factors as: meteorological conditions, size of release, wind speed/ direction, and type of radioactive isotope
“Plume”
LAFD Policy sates that members accumulated dose for one single incident shall not be more than _____ rem in a _____ hr period. ____ rem shall account for a lifetime’s dose
25 rem, 24 hr period. 25 rem
