Taxonomy & Classification Flashcards
How do we classify microorganisms?
We use the science of taxonomy.
How do we name them?
We use the system called Natural Classification developed by Swedish botanist
Carolus Linnaeus
Why is taxonomy important
If we cannot identify and classify microorganisms we cannot control them.
e.g. Quarantine or in diagnosis for administering treatments.
•
So we can ascribe characteristics learned from one microbe to others that are
related.
Disclaimer:
•
The science of Taxonomy is always changing.
•
With better techniques and more information – how we
classify microorganisms CAN and DOES change.
- Phenetic classification.
