Taxonomy Flashcards
Nomenclature
The science of naming and classifying of microbes
Bacteria
Exits in millions of forms that all appear about the same through a microscope.
Taxonomy
7 levels of organism taxa Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
Binomial System
Naming system for organisms always includes the organisms genus and species
They are written in italic with the 1st letter of the genus is capitalized
Strains
One species may include many organisms that vary in just 1 or a few genes
Can be given any type of name including letters numbers and symbols
Biovars
Stands for biological variants if they vary somewhat in biological properties
Examples 1 biovar of a species may grow on sucrose while another cannot
Serovars
Serological variation
Differs immunologically
Examples is salmonella
The surface cover of salmonella varies slightly from 1 serovar to another
Domain Grouping
1990 microbiologist Carl Woes found
Archaea and Bacteria
Cyanobacteria
Blue-green algae is actually a bacteria and have an ability to use sunlight to produce carbohydrates and fix nitrogen from the air
Robert Whittaker
1969 proposed
5 kingdom system to include
Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Monera ( bacteria) Protista
Cell types
Prokaryotes = no nucleus Eukaryotes= nucleus
