Genus name + Species Name
eg. Staphylococcus aureus
(species name is not capitalized)
1st Standard Rule of Bacterial Names
Family name is capitalized and ends with - “aceae”
2nd Standard Rule of Bacterial Names
-Genus name first letter should be capitalized
-Species name is all in lower case
-Both genus and species should be: Italicized in Print or Underlined if script (handwritten)
3rd Standard Rule of Bacterial Names
To abbreviate genus names you can use capitalized first letter of Genus name followed by a period then add species
eg. Staphylococcus aureus = S. aureus
4th Standard Rule of Bacterial Names
Genus name can followed by the word “species” may be used to refer to genus as a whole
eg. Staphylococcus species
5th Standard Rule of Bacterial Names
To abbreviate species you can use sp (singular) or spp (plural)
eg. Staphylococcus sp or Staphylococcus spp
6th Standard Rule of Bacterial Names
bacteria are referred to as a group are neither capitalized nor underlined
eg. staphylococci
7th Standard Rule of Bacterial Names
plural of genusis is genera
eg. There are many genera in the Enterobacteriaceae family.
